SYMBOLISM OF THE ROOF The simple symmetry of downward movement in the roof portrays the giving of a gift from above. A reminder of the many gifts we receive from God, not the least of which is Jesus Christ the Son. Yet, the curved lines not only have a downward movement of God moving towards us. There is also the soaring upwards sweep as we reach out to grow closer to God. As we look up at the ceiling, from the inside, our perspective is suddenly changed. We are the small creation and not the Almighty Creator. For hundreds of years, humanity has built religious buildings with roofs pointing up acknowledging a Being greater than ourselves. From the outside,
as we look at the roof from a distance, its curved sweep stands out sharply
against the straight lines of other buildings. It is generally foreign
to our Western culture, but very native to Eastern culture. Thus it is a
constant reminder that God does not belong to us. God is the God of all
the people of the world, and not only of humanity but of all creation.
"God so loved the world..." (John 3:16)
